Vincent D’Onofrio Responds to Rob Liefeld’s Claim That DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Was Originally a Comedy
Rob Liefeld, the outspoken Deadpool co-creator who recently cut ties with Marvel over grievances about his credit in Deadpool & Wolverine and his exclusion from the film's afterparty, has taken to social media and his podcast to air his frustrations with the company.
His latest podcast episode is titled Marvel: How Feige Lost His Fastball. Not exactly subtle. But his most recent post on X is what got Daredevil fans talking.
Liefeld claimed that before Marvel course-corrected, Daredevil: Born Again was originally envisioned as a "comedy" until the cast and new creative team intervened. He said:
"Prior to the Marvel Brass finally listening to the talent, [Daredevil: Born Again] was a comedy! They brought in action impression Phil Silvera who literally reshot most every episode. The action and stunts are next level!"
This caught the attention of actor Vincent D’Onofrio, who wasn’t about to let that narrative run wild. The Kingpin actor stepped in to set the record straight.
"Phil was hired again for the stunts, that's true. Yet the new episodes, even the action scenes, were written by Dario our showrunner. Phil came in with his expertise and coordinated the stunts."
He also pushed back on the idea that there was some kind of battle between the cast and Marvel Studios, emphasizing that everyone was on the same page about what fans wanted.
"It was a wonderful restart and we all worked really hard for the fans. Charlie, myself, and Dario, our producers, and studio heads felt like we knew what the fans wanted. That was our goal."
There's no doubt that Daredevil: Born Again went through major changes, with Marvel scrapping much of what had been shot under the original creative team.
However, this wasn’t a case of reshoots desperately trying to salvage a mess, like what's reportedly happening with Captain America: Brave New World. Instead, the series was taken back to the drawing board, with a fresh vision that aligned more closely with what fans expect from the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen.
Liefeld’s claims will likely keep stirring debate, but if there’s one thing we can take from D’Onofrio’s response, it’s that Born Again is in the hands of people who care. Whether it turns out as awesome as we hope is something we’ll have to wait and see.
In Marvel Television's Daredevil: Born Again, “Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer with heightened abilities is fighting for justice through his bustling law firm, while former mob boss Wilson Fisk pursues his own political endeavors in New York. When their past identities begin to emerge, both men find themselves on an inevitable collision course.”
Daredevil: Born Again is set to arrive on Disney+ on March 4th, 2025.
