Warner Bros. Developing New GOONIES and GREMLINS Movies

Tucked away in a recent report from Deadline was news that Warner Bros. is developing new Goonies and Gremlins movies. The article outlined the studio’s upcoming projects.

Alongside these classics, Warner Bros. is also hyping films like Clayface, Supergirl, Practical Magic, a Matrix sequel, and Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. With these iconic properties returning.

There are no details in regard to The Goonies, project, but for years, fans have been talking about Goonies sequel, only to be met with skepticism from the original cast.

Back in September, Martha Plimpton and Corey Feldman dismissed rumors of a follow-up. Plimpton was particularly blunt, stating, “People, there is no Goonies 2 script, there is no one ‘attached,’ Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.”

Even Steven Spielberg, the executive producer of the original film, has addressed the sequel speculation. During The Goonies reunion hosted by Josh Gad, Spielberg shared:

Chris [Columbus] and Dick [Richard Donner] and I and Lauren [Shuler Donner] have had a lot of conversations about it, and every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water.

“The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre. I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies we made in the ‘80s.”

The most recent serious attempt came from The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg, who pitched a sequel idea to Richard Donner before his passing.

Unfortunately, that effort never moved forward. With the latest announcement, it’s unclear whether Warner Bros. is pursuing a direct sequel, a reboot, or something entirely different. As of now, no creative team or cast members have been confirmed.

The Gremlins revival is planned as a true third installment rather than a reboot set 30 years after the events of the original film, continuing the mischievous and monstrous adventures.

Harry Potter director Chris Columbus has been attached to the project for years, with Carl Ellsworth contributing a “twisted and dark script.”

Columbus has been vocal about maintaining the spirit of the original films, and he has assured fans that the production would stick to practical effects over CGI: “We’re going old-school with puppets and animatronics. No CGI for the gremlins.”

While the timeline for Gremlins 3 remains uncertain, it sounds like it’s still going to happen.

Warner Bros.’ decision to revisit The Goonies and Gremlins comes with mixed feelings. While these properties are beloved and hold a place in pop culture, they come with huge expectations.

What are your thoughts? Are you excited to see these classics return, or do you think some stories are better left in the past?
