Warner Bros. Is the Reason SUPERMAN & LOIS Was Cancelled Over Concerns It Would Compete With SUPERMAN: LEGACY
It was first announced that the Superman & Lois series was canceled, and some fans blamed The CW for the ending of the series. Well, it turns out that it was actually Warner Bros. and DC Studios that decided the series should end so that it wouldn’t compete with James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.
This report comes from The Wrap, which says that The CW executives examined their slate of scripted original series and decided only four were worth pursuing, which included All American, All American: Homecoming, Walker, and Superman & Lois. The CW entertainment chief Brad Schwartz said:
"We went to our partners at CBS and Warner Bros., and we just were like, 'We’re partners on these things, you sell them randomly around. Here’s our economics...' We can’t keep losing the amount of money we were on the shows. Very collaboratively, everyone got together and we pushed these four shows forward."
As for the reasoning behind why Superman & Lois was shut down, the report goes on to explain that, regardless of how well the series was performing, the decision to end the show was made by Warner Bros., and not The CW. Schwartz confirmed: "They don’t want a competing Superman product in the marketplace," referring to Superman: Legacy.
With James Gunn and Peter Safran coming in to lead the charge at DC Studios, it’s not surprising that they would want to ditch a project like Superman & Lois, which they really have no connection to or creative input on. It just doesn’t seem to fit in with anything they are planning with the DC universe, so of course, it was going to be canceled.
