Warner Bros. Says Tropical Storm Hilary Had "Significant" Impact on BLUE BEETLE Box Office Numbers

Blue Beetle hit theaters this past weekend and when all was said and done, it fell below expectations for its box office take with only $25.4 million. This was DC’s lowest opening weekend at the box office since 2020 with Wonder Woman: 1984 with a little over $16 Million.

Well, Warner Bros. is blaming Tropical Storm Hilary for the film’s low box office numbers. The studio said in a statement to Exhibitor Relations Co.: "The storm's impact is anticipated to be significant, particularly in Southern California where the film is over‐indexing.” Los Angeles is said to be Blue Beetle’s biggest market, but that area was hit with rain, flooding, mudslides, and rock slides.

You know, there could be some truth to that as the state was telling people not to go out due to the potential danger. I don’t know, though. When it comes to these superhero movies, the box office numbers have just been down lately. Audiences simply haven’t been going to theaters to watch these movies like they used to, and I say that some of the blame should be placed on superhero fatigue, and then there’s the fact that DC fans have been burned so many times over the years.

Now that the storm has passed, we’ll just have to wait and see if people who missed it over the weekend will show up to watch it over the week or next weekend. That will tell us if it really was the storm or just a lack of interest.

I’ve been hearing great things about the movie, but I still haven’t had the opportunity to watch it. I want to, but life has been crazy busy lately with traveling and getting my kid prepped and out to college.

The story for the movie centers on Jaime Reyes, the alter ego of the Blue Beetle, a vigilante who has a scarab grafted onto his spine that gives him tremendous powers and the ability to emit blue energy. Here’s the synopsis:

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

Blue Beetle was directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a screenplay adapted by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). The movie stars Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) as Reyes; Bruna Marquezine as Penny, the female lead and love interest; Belissa Escobedo as Jamie’s younger sister, Milagros; as well as Harvey Guillén; and Susan Sarandon as the villain Victoria Kord.
