What Exactly Is the Dial of Destiny in INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY?

The first trailer for Indian Jones and The Dial of Destiny dropped recently, and one the first questions to enter my brain was, "What is the Dial of Destiny!?” So, I started doing some research on real ancient artifacts that this might be.

Every Indiana Jones adventure has dealt with a real-world myth or artifact, so what could this one be? After diving into some research, I think that the Dial of Destiny most likely refers to the Greek myth of the Rota Fortunae, which is best known as the Wheel of Fortune.

The Wheel of Fortune is more of a pop culture reference now, but that ancient original artifact is said to have the power to change destinies, a spin of the wheel can change the positions of those on the wheel: some suffer great misfortune, others gain windfalls.

The wheel is connected to Greek mythology and in the trailer we see features Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and his goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) exploring an ancient temple with Greek writing and imagery. They also come across a statue in the trailer, which very well could be the goddess Tyche or Fortuna, which are the goddesses that the wheel belongs to, the goddess of fortune and fate.

We also learned the villain of the story, Voller (Mads Mikkelsen), is a “man who would like to correct some of the mistakes of the past. There is something that could make the world a much better place to live in. He would love to get his hands on it. Indiana Jones wants to get his hands on it as well.”

It seems like this Wheel of Fortune, a.k.a. the Dial of Destiny, can do just that. I don’t know for sure if the ial of Destiny is inspired by the Wheel of Fortune, but it seems to fit and makes sense to me. We’ll just have to wait and see! What are some of your theories of what the Dial of Destiny could be?

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was directed by James Mangold and has a release date of June 30, 2023. You can watch the trailer again for the film here!
