What's Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Up to in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY? New Rumor Teases His Multiversal Mission
Ever since Avengers: Doomsday was announced, fans have been eager to learn how Robert Downey Jr. will bring Doctor Doom to life in the MCU. Now, a new rumor sheds light on what might drive one of Marvel’s most iconic villains in this highly anticipated film.
According to reliable scooper Daniel Richtman, Doom is embarking on a multiversal mission with a very specific goal. "In Avengers: Doomsday, Doom is after people [who] caused Incursions to the Multiverse."
This sets the stage for a dark and complex narrative, one where Doom is targeting characters responsible for ripping holes through reality itself.
One of those targets? Chris Evans' Steve Rogers. Fans have speculated for years about the implications of Cap’s time-traveling finale in Avengers: Endgame, and this rumor might finally connect the dots.
As previously reported: “When Steve went back in time to go live with Peggy he created the Incursions so now Doom wants him dead.” That retroactive decision, once seen as a peaceful sendoff, may have triggered multiversal chaos.
This also raises questions about Doom's motivations. Is he eliminating threats to the Multiverse out of vengeance, or is he acting under the belief that he's saving it? The fact that these actions seemingly contradict the timeline rules established in Loki only deepens the mystery.
As Avengers: Doomsday continues filming in the UK, fans are still in the dark regarding major plot points. The film was originally set for a May 2026 release, and had that date held, we likely would've seen a teaser this December with Avatar: Fire and Ash.
So far, our only real teases have come from the post-credit scenes in Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. This rumor, though, might give us our clearest sense yet of the narrative direction.
The return of both Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell has already been reported, but not confirmed, and Doom’s mission helps explain why the two would play a key role in this next chapter. With Marvel pivoting away from Kang as the Multiverse Saga’s central threat, Victor Von Doom appears to be stepping in, and doing so with a vengeance.
Earlier this year, co-director Joe Russo spoke about the Downey Jr.’s deep dive into Doom’s psyche. “It’s a very intense process developing the character,” Russo said. “He’s so immersed in it. He is so dialed in.”
He continued, “He’s writing backstory, costume ideas... I think he just loves really rich three‑dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character.” Anthony Russo added, “That’s the kind of artist he is. That’s the kind of actor he is.”
With the MCU in a state of reinvention and Avengers: Doomsday looking like a major pivot point, Doom’s quest for multiversal justice, or destruction, might be exactly the spark this saga needs.
