Will Ferrell Describes His CEO Character in the BARBIE Movie as "Insensitive" and "Weird"
Will Ferrell (SNL, Elf) has had a ton of comedy gold hit movies in his career, and now he’s just having fun with the career choices he’s making. With a new Christmas movie titled Spirited that was just released on Apple, and an R-rated animated movie titled Strays coming out next year, fans are looking forward to seeing Ferrell as a CEO in the Barbie movie that’s in post-production.
While Ferrell is not as well-known or quoted on the street for his more serious roles, they do exist, and it’s always interesting to see him take them on. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Ferrell described his role in the Barbie movie, and what he thinks of the picture as a whole, saying:
It is, in my humble opinion, the ultimate example of high art and low art. It’s a loving homage to the brand and, at the same time, couldn’t be more satirical—just an amazing comment on male patriarchy and women in society and why Barbie’s criticized and yet why every little girl still wants to play with Barbie. Boy, when I read it, I was like, “This is fantastic.” I get to play the CEO of Mattel and be that guy who’s just insensitive but weird and then, not to spoil anything, but…. Anyway, that’s what excites me.
It’s going to be fun to see what Oscar-nominated director Greta Gerwig and her writing partner Noah Baumbach come up with. They’ve teased all along that this movie was going to be unexpected, and another of the film’s stars, Ryan Gosling, teased that the film has the "best script I've ever read."
If nothing else, the secrecy of the plot and the buzz around the movie have definitely piqued the interest of movie fans.
Barbie is set to be released in theaters on July 21, 2023. Are you looking forward to checking it out?
