With THE WALKING DEAD Ratings Dropping to an All Time Low Will the Series Really Stick Around For 10 More Years?
I’ve actually been enjoying the ninth season of The Walking Dead so far. I really like that it feels like a fresh start, and I’m curious to see where the story is headed for the characters. But, the ratings for the show have dropped to an all-time low.
The last episode, which is the second of Season 9, drew a 2.0 rating in the key 18-49 demographic with 4.9 million total viewers in Live+Same Day numbers. The previous series low was a 2.4 rating in its first season. The series low total viewers is 4.7 million, which also came during an episode from the first season. It is a 20% drop from week to week. Also, the Season 9 premiere of the series was the lowest premiere episode since its first season.
Yikes! With the ratings for the show constantly dropping like this, will AMC and the show’s creative team be able to really keep it going for another decade? That’s their plan. AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan previously said:
“The Walking Dead is a universe…and we have a plan to manage over the next decade, plus. That plan is a careful plan to respect the world of the fans of that world.”
I don’t know if AMC is concerned about these numbers or not, but it’s definitely not looking good for the series. A drop in ratings is never a good thing, and if they keep dropping, I don’t see how their ten year plan is going to work. I think this is interesting because the quality of the show has gone up, but previously audiences just aren’t tuning in to watch anymore.
If you’ve stopped watching The Walking Dead, what is it that made you give up in the show?
