WONDER MAN Showrunner Reveals Season 2 Premiere Was Already Written Before Disney Decided “It Didn’t Make Sense”
When Marvel Studios and Disney pulled the plug on Wonder Man, it caught just about everyone off guard.
The series had already been renewed for a second season, fans and critics had embraced its first run, and the creative team was already moving full speed ahead on what came next.
Now, series showrunner Andrew Guest has opened up about what happened, revealing that work on Season 2 was much further along than many fans realized.
In fact, the premiere episode had already been written before Marvel and Disney made the surprising decision to cancel the series.
Guest recently shared a TikTok video addressing the situation, clearing up several rumors that had started circulating online.
According to him, the cancellation had nothing to do with scheduling conflicts or a secret Marvel movie taking priority.
He explained: “I feel how you all feel. And I just want to clear up what I can here. This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works.
“And Destin’s schedule, and no one’s schedule, was an issue. Yahya, Destin, Sir Ben, and I all loved making this show. All felt passionately about continuing to do it and were eager to.
“Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared. The writer’s room was supposed to start this month. The production was supposed to begin early next year.”
Instead, Guest says the decision came from higher up within Disney and Marvel, despite the fact that plans for another season had already been approved only months earlier.
He continued: “And there was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them — even though a few months ago it did.
“And that’s essentially all I really know. Numbers aren’t really shared with me. And even though the writer’s room hadn’t started, I had written the first episode of season two.
“And we had an outline for where the season would go. And everyone felt really good about it. It was gonna be a really incredible season that, hopefully, surpassed season one.”
That revelation makes the cancellation hurt even more. This wasn’t a show that had barely begun planning its future.
The creative team already had a direction, the cast was ready to return, contracts were signed, and production was expected to begin early next year!
Guest also thanked fans for rallying around the series and hopes the conversation surrounding the cancellation leads to bigger discussions about the kinds of projects studios are choosing to support.
He said: “I appreciate everybody getting out there and letting your voices be heard about how you feel about this.
“There’s important conversations being had online about the kinds of stories that we’re prioritising, and the kind of shows that platforms want to make.
“I hope people are listening. And I also hope that Emmy voters are thinking about Yahya and how much he deserves an Emmy for the incredible work he did on this show.”
It’s especially disappointing because Wonder Man felt like something genuinely different for the MCU. Rather than leaning into world-ending stakes or multiverse chaos, it delivered a character-driven story with plenty of heart, humor, and personality.
It offered a fresh a unique perspective on superhero storytelling that stood apart from much of Marvel’s recent Disney+ lineup.
It’s a real shame that a series this good won’t get the chance to continue its story. Simon Williams, Trevor Slattery, and the rest of these characters deserved another season, especially when the creative team was so clearly invested in where the story was headed.
While Disney’s recent effort to scale back streaming spending and refocus the MCU on theatrical releases likely played a role, Wonder Man feels like one of the unfortunate casualties of that strategy rather than a series that had run its course.
For now, Simon Williams joins the growing list of Multiverse Saga characters whose futures remain uncertain.
Hopefully, this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him, because it certainly feels like there was a lot more story left to tell.
