WONDER MAN Star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Breaks Silence on Season 2 Cancellation: "See You At The Emmys"
Marvel Studios fans are still trying to process the surprise cancellation of Wonder Man, and now the man at the center of the series has finally shared his thoughts.
Just a day after the unexpected announcement that Wonder Man won't return for a second season on Disney+, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who brought Simon Williams to life, took to Instagram with a heartfelt message thanking fans for embracing the series while also looking ahead with plenty of confidence.
The cancellation came as a genuine surprise. Marvel Studios had previously announced plans for Season 2 only a couple of months after the show's streaming debut, and series co-creator Destin Daniel Cretton recently confirmed work was already underway on the next batch of episodes.
The news landed less than a week after Marvel Studios' Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con and just as Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters. Cretton, who co-created Wonder Man and directed its first two episodes, is also directing the latest Spider-Man adventure.
Despite its short run, Wonder Man earned widespread praise from both critics and fans. It also accomplished something few superhero projects ever do by breaking into major awards season.
Abdul-Mateen received an Emmy nomination for his performance, making history as the first actor to earn Emmy nominations for roles in both Marvel and DC projects, thanks to Wonder Man and Watchmen.
Addressing the cancellation for the first time, Abdul-Mateen wrote: "Word just dropped that Wonder Man won’t be coming back for Season 2. (And if you don’t knowww, now ya knoww! 😬) That’s life, right? Everything will shake out.
“I wanted to say thank you to everybody who WATCHED the show, ENJOYED the show, and SHARED that they enjoyed the show in some way or other. The show worked. And that’s my favorite thing about it."
He went on to explain why the series meant so much to him, especially after seeing the reaction from viewers throughout its run.
"I could see it on the faces of the Youtube Reactors (because I watched along with y’all this time. Shoutout to y’all) and I can see in the messages I get saying how the show reminded some of you not to give up, and I feel it in the genuine love shared when I bump into some of you all during the day.
“So, thinking of you all today. I’m glad we got to be a part of something cool. Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS."
It was a classy response that focused less on disappointment and more on celebrating the connection the series made with audiences. Abdul-Mateen clearly believes Wonder Man found its audience, even if that journey ended much sooner than expected.
Cretton also showed his support, liking the post before sharing it to his own Instagram story with the simple caption, "Love this man."
That's the extent of his public reaction so far, and Marvel Studios hasn't offered any explanation for why Wonder Man was cancelled after previously committing to another season.
The bigger question now is what this means for Marvel Television moving forward. Right now, only VisionQuest and Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 have officially been announced.
With Disney continuing to shift its strategy, it's hard not to wonder if Marvel is scaling back its streaming ambitions and putting more of its attention on theatrical releases instead, much like what's happened with the Star Wars franchise.
Whether Simon Williams or Trevor Slattery return somewhere else in the MCU remains to be seen, but it certainly feels like there's still room for these characters if Marvel decides to revisit them.
For now, Wonder Man may have reached the end of the road, but if Abdul-Mateen's closing message is any indication, he's already looking toward Emmy night with a smile.
