X-MEN ’97 Officially Renewed for Season 3 as Season 2 Heads to Disney+ in Summer 2026

It’s a great time to be a mutant fan. During New York Comic Con, Marvel Studios announced that X-Men ’97 has been officially renewed for Season 3. The revival series has been a huge hit on Disney+, and Season 2 is already set to arrive in summer 2026.

Comic Con attendees got an exclusive first look at what’s coming next for the animated heroes. The trailer revealed the return of the powerful villain Apocalypse, with the X-Men scattered across different points in time.

Iconic characters like Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Jubilee, and Nightcrawler will have to fight their way back to the 1990s after being lost across eras.

Season 1 of X-Men ’97 premiered on March 20, 2024, and wrapped up its ten-episode run on May 15. The show picked up right where the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series from the 1990s left off, continuing the story of the mutant team still struggling to coexist in a world that fears them.

The revival was praised by both fans and critics for capturing the heart and tone of the original series while expanding its story in exciting new ways.

At the start of the new series, the X-Men were reeling from the apparent death of Professor Charles Xavier. In his absence, Magneto stepped in to lead the team according to Charles’ final will, only for it to be revealed that Xavier was alive and living among the Shi’ar Empire.

His return helped the X-Men take down Bastion, a deadly hybrid of human and Sentinel technology. But the victory came with a cost: the team was scattered through time.

By the finale, Cyclops and Jean Grey were trapped in the year 3960 A.D., while Rogue, Beast, Nightcrawler, Charles, and Magneto found themselves in ancient Egypt around 3000 B.C., where they encountered a young version of Apocalypse.

Fans also got a glimmer of hope that Gambit, who sacrificed himself during a Sentinel battle, might still be alive. And of course, there’s Wolverine’s brutal fate when Magneto tore the adamantium right out of his body, setting up some heavy consequences for what’s next.

Behind the scenes, X-Men ’97 saw some big creative changes. Original head writer Beau DeMayo was dismissed by Marvel shortly before the Season 1 premiere, though he completed work on Season 2. For Season 3, Matthew Chauncey, best known for his work on What If...?, will take over writing duties.

The voice cast brings the classic characters back to life, including Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.

With X-Men ’97 now officially moving into a third season and the next chapter set to drop in 2026, fans have plenty to look forward to. The mutants are lost across time, old enemies are rising again, and the future of mutantkind looks as thrilling as ever.
