X-MEN Rumor Reveals Which Mutants Are Set to Lead Marvel's Reboot, Wolverine's Status, and More
Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is still a few years away, but that hasn't stopped the rumor mill from kicking into high gear. Fans are eager to find out which mutants will make the jump into the MCU first, who will be cast in the iconic roles, and whether Wolverine will once again dominate the franchise.
A new rumor may have shed some light on those questions, including which heroes are currently expected to appear, where Wolverine stands, and why Sadie Sink is still heavily linked to Jean Grey.
The latest scoop comes from former Nexus Point News insider @ApocHorseman, who has built a solid track record with previous Marvel reports. According to the scooper, there's a core group of mutants that he can currently verify for the film.
He wrote: "Since we’re on the topic of X-Men and people asked, here’s everyone I know is for sure in the film." That lineup reportedly includes Cyclops, Jean Grey, Emma Frost, Rogue, Storm, Professor X, and Magneto.
There may be even more familiar faces joining them. He added: "Characters I’ve heard but haven’t been able to confirm are Beast and Angel, so please take those with a grain of salt."
Before fans start assuming that's the complete roster, he later clarified: "This is just who I’ve heard is in the film and can verify. There [are] definitely more characters, and this isn’t the full lineup. Marvel’s good at keeping some secrets."
One of the biggest surprises is who isn't mentioned. According to the insider, he hasn't heard anything about Wolverine appearing in the reboot.
Considering the character dominated much of 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise, giving other mutants the spotlight first could actually be a refreshing direction for Marvel Studios.
There's little doubt Wolverine will eventually arrive in the MCU, and it's easy to imagine Marvel saving him for a later reveal or even a standalone project.
The rumor also adds more fuel to the ongoing speculation surrounding Sadie Sink. @ApocHorseman continues to stand by previous claims that she'll play Jean Grey in the MCU, meaning Spider-Man: Brand New Day could introduce the first official member of Marvel Studios' new X-Men team before the reboot even arrives.
It’s an unexpected place to debut such a major mutant, but introducing Jean Grey in what will likely be one of Marvel's biggest movies of the summer would instantly put the spotlight on the character.
Adding to that, insider @MyTimeToShineH is once again claiming that Sink's Jean Grey will serve as the central character of the X-Men franchise moving forward, suggesting Marvel has some major long-term plans for the iconic mutant.
Casting rumors continue to swirl around the rest of the team as well. Recent reports have suggested Adam Driver is being eyed to play Magneto, while Bill Skarsgård has reportedly emerged as the favorite for Professor X. Neither casting has been confirmed by Marvel Studios, but they're the latest names making the rounds as anticipation builds.
There's also growing curiosity about when Marvel will finally pull back the curtain on the reboot. With production expected to begin in the coming months, fans are wondering if next weekend's San Diego Comic-Con could bring an official cast announcement.
That's certainly possible, but it's probably more likely that Marvel Studios uses its Hall H presentation to focus on Avengers: Doomsday, with perhaps a few updates on Avengers: Secret Wars as well. If that's the case, the X-Men reveal may have to wait a little longer.
Last year, filmmaker Jake Schreier spoke about what directing Thunderbolts taught him that could carry over to the X-Men reboot. He explained:
"I loved working on it. And I loved working with everyone at Marvel. I think that the lesson of the movie is also the lesson in making the movie, which is that you cannot, and I mean, it's kind of obvious making it, that you cannot do it alone. I think that Thunderbolts* is the product of just a massive amount of work."
He continued: "Jon Watts was my roommate in college, and I used to go see the Spider-Man movies and be like, 'God. That just seems like so much work.
“There must be some way where it doesn't feel that way,' and it's like, 'No, it's just a massive amount of work by a ton of people who care deeply,' and I think that I would not have gotten through this without so many [of them]."
Schreier wrapped things up by saying: "If you can learn to work within that environment and really harness the kind of energy that those people bring, then there's an opportunity to really tell interesting stories and take things to places that are unexpected, and try to make something special."
For now, every casting report and character rumor should still be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism until Marvel Studios makes things official.
Still, if these latest claims prove accurate, it looks like the MCU's X-Men won't be leaning on Wolverine right out of the gate. Instead, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Rogue, Emma Frost, Professor X, and Magneto could finally get the spotlight they've long deserved.
Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot is currently expected to hit theaters in 2028.
