Zack Snyder Teases His R-Rated Cut of REBEL MOON Saying It's "Very Hard, Sexy, Violent, and Crazy"

Zack Snyder recently discussed his R-rated cut of Rebel Moon and teased some things that fans can expect. I’ve actually been looking forward to watching this movie and I hope that Snyder delivers a really cool film with a great story.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Snyder said: “I’d written the script, in a vacuum just as I would was my normal aesthetic — a very hard, very like sexy, violent, crazy, everything’s all at 11.”

As he was developing the project, he was initially thinking he could “collapse it onto a more broader audience adventure.” He was going to take that R-rated film that he’d written and dial it down to PG-13, but then when he met with Netflix to talk about the movie, that all changed when they swayed him to “go back to your original subversive R-rated version.”

Snyder said: “I was like, ‘Yeah, that’d be great.’ And they go, ‘Then we could have like, you know, you could do your thing and we could have that as a separate piece of, you know, content.’”

The filmmaker later said, “I’m super proud of the PG-13 version of the movie. I really am. I think it’s really fun and it’s clean and cool but again, just the sort of weirdo darkness of the R-rated version if that was sort of my original thesis for what the movie could be, that’s what we did. That’s what we made in the R-rated version.”

Snyder previously talked about the extended version of his film where he would give viewers “close to an hour of extra content.” He explained: “I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version. You really get to see a lot. It’s just more painted-in all the way,. The director’s [cut] is a settle-in deep dive, which I have notoriously done throughout my career. I don’t know how I got into this director’s cut thing, but what I will say about it is that, for me, the director’s cuts have always been something I had to fight for in the past and nobody wanted it. It was this bastard child that I was always trying to put together because they felt like there was a deeper version.”

In the story, a group of ragtag rebels rise up to fight against a giant, evil Empire. It’s set in a “peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. They dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand against the Tyrant.”

This is a two-part film and each part will come with an R-rated edition that fans can watch as well. The movie stars Charlie Hunnam, Ed Skrein, Bae Doona, Djimon Hounsou. Ray Fisher, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Anthony Hopkins, and Alfonso Herrera.

Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire is scheduled to arrive on Netflix on December 22nd following a limited theatrical release.
