The highlights from this year's Comic-Con were Tom Hiddleston surprising Hall H as Loki and Andrew Garfield spending a majority of his panel in character as Spider-Man. With the exception of Sacha Baron Cohen and the Spinal Tap crew, actors very rarely make appearances dressed in character. An even rarer sight is seeing voice actors dressed as the animated characters they play. It can be a bit bizarre, but it's always a treat to see. Here are 15 (and a half-ish) actors in cosplay as their own characters.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
As part of their panel for SDCC '13, the cast pre-recorded a bit that had them "forced" to dress up as their cartoon counterparts -- Bill Hader as Flint Lockwood, Anna Faris as Sam Sparks, Andy Samberg as Brent McHale, and Terry Crews as Earl Devereaux.
For a Halloween appearance on Ellen, Jane Lynch came dressed as her Wreck-It Ralph character Sgt. Calhoun from the game Hero's Duty.
In 2010, the cast of Megamind came to Comic-Con to promote their film. Will Ferrell dressed up as the titular character. Wrongly assuming his castmates would dress up too, he joked that he "felt like a turd" on stage.
Despicable Me 2
When he came on Ellen to promote Despicable Me 2, Steve Carell didn't just come dressed as his character Gru, he came IN character with his "New Mexico" accent.
For their Wondercon panel earlier this year, Molly C. Quinn came sporting a Supergirl costume, whereas Matt Bomer merely donned a pair of Clark Kent style glasses. I'm only counting Bomer as 1/2, but with his resemblance to the Man of Steel, and since he was going to play Supes in Brett Ratner's live-action project before it fell apart, I guess he's kinda always dressed as Superman.
Back in 2006, Seth MacFarlane did a fairly amusing sketch for MADtv where he revealed that Family Guy was originally intended as a live-action sitcom. In the sketch, MacFarlane played Peter Griffin with the MADtv cast filling in the rest of the roles.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
For the short film "Hughes The Force," James Arnold Taylor and Catherine Taber made cameo appearances as their characters from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Taylor portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi and Taber appeared as Padmé Amidala.
Before taking over as the voice of Inspector Gadget for Don Adams in 1999, voice acting legend Maurice LaMarche appeared in the flesh as the Inspector ten years earlier on The Super Mario Bros. Supershow.
Uncharted, God of War, Grand Theft Auto IV
The cover story for the June 4, 2010 issue of Entertainment Weekly featured a list of the 100 best characters of the last 20 years. For spot #93, three video game characters got some love as did the voice actors behind them: Uncharted's Nathan Drake (Nolan North), God of War's Kratos (T.C. Carson), and Grand Theft Auto IV's Niko Bellic (Michael Hollick).
