Ava DuVernay's A WRINKLE IN TIME Adds Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Dr. Murry
I still haven't read all of Madeleine L'Engle's Newberry Medal-winning book A Wrinkle in Time, but I'm very excited to see what Selma and 13th director Ava DuVernay does with Disney's upcoming big budget film adaptation. The story follows a young girl named Meg (Storm Reid), her little brother, and her friend who go on a search for her missing father, a government scientist who was working on a top secret project involving an inter-dimensional tesseract. Joining the trio on their journey are three supernatural beings: Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), and Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon).
Variety reports that Gugu Mbatha-Raw has joined the cast and she'll be playing Dr. Murry, Meg's mother and a scientist, who, along with Meg's father, discovers the wrinkle in time. DuVernay took to Twitter to confirm the news:
The actress has starred in a bunch of movies since her breakout role in Beyond The Lights a few years ago, including Jupiter Ascending, Concussion, and Free State of Jones, and you can also see her in one of the new episodes of Black Mirror that just hit Netflix today. She'll next appear in Jessica Chastain's Miss Sloane, Bad Robot's God Particle, and Disney's live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast.
I don't think this film has an official release date yet, but looking ahead to Disney's release schedule for the next few years, I'm guessing it'll arrive on December 25, 2018.
