CAPTAIN MARVEL Confirmed to Tell the Hero's Origin Story

Movie Captain Marvel by Joey Paur

I'm excited to see what Marvel has planned for their Captain Marvel film. They already got a great actress, Brie Larson, set to play the role, and the script for the film is currently being developed by screenwriters Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out).

During a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege was asked about Captain Marvel, and he revealed that it will completely tell the origin story of Carol Danvers' road to becoming Captain Marvel. He said:

"[Black] Panther is not really an origin story, since we saw him already in Civil War. But his standalone certainly introduces you to 99% of his world that you never saw. And Captain Marvel is certainly an origin. It's an origin story from the start."

When previously talking about the film, Perlman talked about their plans for the film and said that this origin story will not be the same origin story from the comics because it is too close to the origin of Green Lantern. She explains:

"I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She’s such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do. There’s a lot of reinvention that needs to happen. And also, she’s her own person and she’s a great character. We have to be aware of what’s happened in other Marvel film and makes sure that her particular storyline is unique and fun and also fits in within this world that’s going on at the same time. It’s a little bit of an interesting story gauntlet. It’s been good to have a partner. It’s been an incredible experience. If we can pull it off it could be an incredibly important but also really fun and kick-ass superhero film.”

In the comics, Danvers is saved by a Kree warrior named Mar-Vell after a Kree machine explodes and exposes her to Kree radiation. In the process Danvers is infused with Mar-Vell's superhuman powers such as super strength, speed, and the ability to fly. There's no information on what her new origin will be, but I'm sure Marvel and their creative team have come up with something that fans will embrace.

Captain Marvel hits theaters on July 6th, 2018.
