Colin Trevorrow Teases Possible Plot Elements of JURASSIC WORLD Sequel
Considering Jurassic World is now officially the third highest-grossing movie of all time, it's a no-brainer that Universal has put a sequel into development and already given it a release date of June 22nd, 2018. Colin Trevorrow, who directed and co-wrote Jurassic World, won't be back to direct, but he and writing partner Derek Connolly are returning to write the screenplay for the still untitled sequel. But what will that sequel be about? We know Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are coming back, but we haven't heard too many hints about the actual plot of the new movie.
Well, Trevorrow recently spoke with Wired and gave them an idea about what kinds of story elements might appear next time around:
"[It will not be] just a bunch of dinosaurs chasing people on an island. That’ll get old real fast."
Sounds like those of you expecting a return to Isla Nublar will be disappointed. But then Trevorrow teased an idea that I think a lot of you will find very fascinating: "open source" dinosaur creation.
"And this isn’t something necessarily that was in the book but is a seed that I wanted to plant in this movie, is that might be able to grow in more of these movies if they decide to make more of them, is: What if this went open source? It's almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?"
"And Dr. Wu says in the film, when he's warning Dr. Mesrani, 'we’re not always going to be the only ones who can make a dinosaur'. I think that’s an interesting idea that even if we don’t explore fully in this film, there is room for this universe to expand. I shouldn’t use the word universe, because people will think we’re making a Jurassic World universe -- we’re not."
You can read more of the interview at Wired, but those are the most relevant quotes. It's still early in the writing process for Trevorrow and Connolly, so these ideas could change, but it's an interesting window into their current mindset moving forward with this franchise.
