FAST & FURIOUS - “At Least Three More” Coming Says Universal Pictures Chairman

We previously reported that the Fast & Furious franchise might be coming to a close after a couple films. During a THR executive roundtable, Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley helped clarify rumored news.

When asked directly about how many more Fast & Furious movies we might expect, Langley said,

"We think there’s at least three more."

Langley spoke about how the movies have become multi generational over the last 13 years. She then spoke about how Paul Walker had been such an integral part of the story and the movies' on and off screen family. She did interject that it is an ensemble cast full of many characters and there remains opportunities for new characters. She then revealed that they develop the movies in batches and that they are looking at what they can do in the next trilogy arc.

Langley on the future of Fast & Furious:

"I think it’s still a growing franchise. We’ll see what happens with Furious 7, obviously, but our box office has grown over the past three or four films and internationally, in particular. So we think that there’s more to mine there. But we’re of course very mindful about fatigue."

Langley does on to say there are opportunities in other mediums like a TV spin off and theme parks between the releases of the films.

Lots to chew on here. My most important take away is that Universal Pictures is going to keep making these movies and will rotate out actors ready to move on from the franchise. As long as the movies continue to be fun, I'll keep watching them. We've seen a changing ensemble cast work on ER, but I can't think of a film franchise other than James Bond in which this has happened.
