Fox Bringing in Doug Liman to Direct GAMBIT
With the departure of Rupert Wyatt, the filming of the X-Men spinoff film Gambit seemed to be on the ropes. Well, it appears that Fox has found the captain for what I consider a sinking ship.
After many meetings, Doug Liman is in final negotiations to take on the card flinging Cajun, which was previously rumored.
Liman definitely has the pedigree to take on what is sure to be an action-packed movie. With movies like Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith under his belt, Liman certainly has the eye for action. With the full support of Fox and Simon Kinberg, who is producing the film and is said to be heavily involved in the making of this film, what can go wrong?
Like I said earlier, this is a sinking ship. There are a few factors that point in this direction, Liman not being one of them. What I am referring to is the mysterious departure of Wyatt. It first came out that there were scheduling problems and he had other commitments. However, it has been said that Wyatt left over creative differences. THR quoted one studio exec as saying:
"He wants to make the best version of something, and he's so desperately afraid of making something not good."
Honestly, no one wants to see a Gambit movie that is “not good.” Is it the script? Is it the strong studio involvement? Possibly one or both of those reasons. Either one of those issues would break a movie and would cause me to run too.
I am not sure what it is about this project, but it has seemed doomed to me from its inception. Unfortunately, I feel that this is going to be Fantastic Four bad. I guess we will have to wait and see if Liman is the man to bring the Gambit that fans are hoping to see to the big screen.
Does this project have a shot?
