Guillermo Del Toro Provides New Update on PACIFIC RIM 2
While there's definitely a vocal fanbase out there who wants a Pacific Rim 2, Universal and Legendary Pictures are still trying to figure out if it makes financial sense for them to dive back into the world of Jaegers and kaiju. The movie has been on a roller coaster ride over the past few months as the studio gave it a 2017 release date, only to take that away and suspend production indefinitely. But the last we heard, the studio has committed to a "fully immersive" sequel and claims that they're waiting on writer/director Guillermo del Toro and the rest of the creative team to "continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film."
This morning, del Toro offered an updated about where the project currently stands:
So at this point, there's nothing more he can do until he hears back from the studio. He's obviously devoted to bringing this project to life, and he's clearly excited about the prospect (even talking about casting a certain Game of Thrones star he met with recently if the movie should come to fruition), so we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed that the studio's number crunchers come up with favorable results.
