SPIDER-MAN Director Jon Watts Talks Briefly About The Film

EW has a new interview with Spider-Man director Jon Watts, and while the piece mostly focuses on his Sundance film Cop Car (which hits theaters on August 7th; read our review here), it briefly touches on his new take on the web-slinging superhero.

First up, he spoke briefly about actor Tom Holland, who won the role of Peter Parker in a hard-fought battle with a bunch of other actors around his age:

"He can be a real high school student. That’s why people love Spider-Man. He’s the most grounded, relatable of superheroes. And Tom can really do that. He captures that. And he can do a standing back-flip. He’s perfect."

Watts was also asked whether he's collaborating with other filmmakers (presumably Anthony and Joe Russo) on the character, or if he's just concentrating on his upcoming solo Spidey movie:

"I mean, it’s a big universe, so everyone sort of works with each other to make sure that there’s continuity and that it all fits together. It’s really exciting actually. We’re just getting started, working on the script and all that, but it’s going to be a great process."

The script he mentions is being written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who have spoken up about the film a couple of times this week already. They're really going to lean into the comedic elements of the character, but we won't get to see the fruits of their labor until July 28th, 2017. We will, however, see Holland suit up as Spider-Man before that in Captain America: Civil War next year.
