Upcoming Han Solo Movie and Spider-Man Animated Film Discussed by Directors

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are preparing to take on two big film projects that fans are excited about. They are developing the Han Solo anthology film for Lucasfilm and an animated Spider-Man movie for Sony Pictures.

These are the two guys who brought us The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street, and they are obviously moving on to bigger and better things. They are set to direct the Han Solo film, and in an interview with IGN, Miller talked about taking on the huge undertaking and the pressure that comes along with it:

“It’s a huge pressure. We always try and find something that’s gonna… give fire to our bellies and do a really good job. And this feels like there’s a lot of pressure to not screw this up. So we’ve definitely got that motivation and then the rest of it is about trying to give audiences a fresh experience that doesn’t feel like you’re just trying to check off some checklist of beats that you’re expecting and make something that feels new and exciting for people, but at the same time honoring what was so great about that character.”

The script for the film is being written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan, and apparently it will focus on a young Han Solo and how he became the smuggler and scoundrel that we all know and love. Miller went on to say:

“When I was a kid on the playground, fights were about who got to play Han Solo. He’s just one of the best characters ever created… I could talk to you for a day about why he is the perfect blend of rogue-ish cowboy… Morally ambiguous, but has a clear moral compass. He’s funny. He’s off the cuff.”

As for the Spider-Man animated film, that is something that they are writing and producing. It will be a standalone film that will not connect to the MCU. Miller doesn’t get into an specifics of the film, but he does say that it will be unique and different:

“I will say, it is not just another Peter Parker origin story that you’ve seen 400 times. It is something totally unique and different and not like anything you’ve seen. That’s all I can say… and you’re going to love it!”

I have no doubt that it will be better than the last few Spider-Man films that have been made. It will be really interesting to see how it turns out compared to the live-action reboot that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are working on together. Both films seem to have very talented individuals working on them, so I’m curious to see which one turns out better.

The Han Solo movie is set to be released on May 25th, 2018, and the animated Spider-Man film will hit theater a couple months later on July 20th, 2018.
