A New MATRIX Movie Is Coming From Writer and Director Drew Goddard

Warner Bros. is moving forward with another Matrix movie and writer and director Drew Goddard is spearheading the development.

Goddard is best known for his work on The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and Bad Times at the El Royale, and he will write and direct The Matrix movie. The sci-fi franchise’s original co-scribe and co-director Lana Wachowski will serve as executive producer.

Goddard said in a statement: “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life.  Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”

Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production added: “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”

He continued: “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

The project is in early development and there’s no word on if Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, or any of the other original cast members will return.

The last movie in the franchise, The Matrix Resurrections, had some cool moments and tried some different and unique things, but it ultimately fell flat for audiences and fans.

It’ll be interesting to see what Goddard has planned for this next chapter in the franchise. I hope he comes up with something really cool! I would be nice to see a new Matrix film reach the bar set by the original movie, but that’s not going to be easy.

It was previously reported that Goddard was being considered by Marvel Studios for Spider-Man 4, but it looks like that’s not going to happen, now.
