Alicia Silverstone Will Reprise Her Role as Cher in New CLUELESS Series at Peacock

Well, dust off your knee-high socks and plaid skirts, because Clueless is officially making a comeback with Alicia Silverstone stepping back into her iconic role as Cher Horowitz.

Peacock is developing a brand-new Clueless series, and Silverstone will not only star in the show but also serve as an executive producer.

The series is being written and executive produced by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the duo behind Gossip Girl and The O.C., alongside Dollface creator Jordan Weiss. Joining them on the executive producing team are Clueless movie writer-director Amy Heckerling and original film producer Robert Lawrence.

The show is being produced by CBS Studios in association with Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.

CBS Studios, which owns the television rights to the 1995 Paramount film, had long been looking for the right opportunity to revive the IP. After shopping the project around, it landed back at Peacock, which had previously shown interest in developing a Clueless series.

This new series marks the second major CBS IP to find a new life on a streaming platform, following Little House On the Prairie, which is in development at Netflix.

Longtime fans will remember that this isn’t the first time Clueless has hit the small screen. A 1996 half-hour comedy series based on the movie ran for three seasons (one on ABC, two on UPN), with Rachel Blanchard playing Cher and Stacey Dash returning as Dionne. That show was also created by Amy Heckerling. I actually really enjoyed the series!

The original Clueless film was loosely based on Jane Austen’s Emma, and followed the adventures of Cher Horowitz, a fashion-forward, kind-hearted teen navigating love, friendship, and social status at Bronson Alcott High in Beverly Hills.

Alongside Silverstone, the film starred Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, and Paul Rudd, and has gone on to become one of the most beloved teen comedies of all time.

Silverstone, who scored fan love for revisiting Cher in a recent Super Bowl ad, is staying busy these days. She’ll next appear in the Acorn TV series Irish Blood, the indie Pretty Thing, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, and the Netflix holiday film Merry Little Ex-Mas.

As for the Clueless series, no details or release date has been announced yet, but it’ll be fun to see what it ends up being.
