ALIEN: ROMULUS Star Teases a "Very, Very, Very, Different" Kind Film in the Franchise
We’ve got a new film coming to the long-running Alien franchise with Alien: Romulus. The movie comes from Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez, and it tells a standalone story not connected to any of the previous Alien films, and that story is set between the events of Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens.
Alien: Romulus follows a “group of young people on a distant world who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.” The pitch that Alvarez initially made is said to be a “really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.”
Now, one of the film’s stars, David Jonsson, is teasing that the film is taking a "very, very, very different" approach to the franchise. While talking to MovieWeb, he said:
"I know that it's very, very, very different. I think Alien was slightly before my generation, in terms of its depth and its impact at the time, but you know, we have such an incredible spin on it. And we had Fede Álvarez as our director, Ridley Scott producing it. It was incredible to work with those people, and opposite Cailee Spaeny, who is just a brilliant actress. I think it's going to be cool. I'm very excited."
The movie also stars Isabela Merced and is also joined by Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and newcomer Aileen Wu.
According to Spaeny, “It’s supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie. They brought the same team from Aliens, the James Cameron film. The same people who built those xenomorphs actually came on and built ours. So getting to see the original design with the original people who have been working on these films for 45-plus years and has been so much of their life has been really incredible.”
Alvarez is directing from his script written by Rodo Sayagues. Ridley Scott is also a producer on the movie along with Michael Pruss (Boston Strangler) for Scott Free, with Brent O’Connor (Bullet Train), Elizabeth Cantillon (Persuasion) and Tom Moran (The Donut King) serving as executive producers.
Alien: Romulus is set to hit theaters on August 16th.
