Ana de Armas Joins Tom Cruise in Doug Liman’s Deep Sea Supernatural Thriller DEEPER
Tom Cruise is going back underwater, and this time, he’s bringing Ana de Armas is joining Cruise in Deeper, an ambitious undersea supernatural thriller that’s quietly been gaining momentum behind the scenes.
Directed by Edge of Tomorrow filmmaker Doug Liman, the project seems to be surfacing fast, with Cruise and de Armas reportedly undergoing diving training together.
The story centers on an astronaut who embarks on a mission to explore a never-before-reached trench, only to come face to face with a terrifying force lurking in the depths. It’s got the right mix of cosmic mystery and psychological dread, and it’s been simmering in Hollywood waters for almost a decade.
Back in 2016, MGM picked up a spec script from Max Landis with Bradley Cooper set to star and Kornél Mundruczó in the director’s chair. That version didn’t launch.
Then came iterations with Idris Elba and director Baltasar Kormákur, which also stalled out. But now, with Cruise on board and Christopher McQuarrie reportedly shaping the script, Deeper has resurfaced with real weight behind it.
Deeper is reportedly a $200 million production, which is enough to scare off Warner Bros. But Cruise, fresh off his crowd-pleasing debut for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, is still a major box office force. De Armas is on a hot streak too, with her John Wick spin-off Ballerina expected to open north of $40 million.
Cruise, Liman, and McQuarrie already have a real-life space film in development with NASA and SpaceX involved, but rumor has it Deeper might dive into production first. As one source put it, “Cruise would like to make this one next and it’s not a question of if, but where he decides to make it.”
No official comment from Cruise’s team yet. But if you’re telling us Cruise and de Armas are strapping on wetsuits to battle eldritch sea horrors in a pressure-crushing trench? Yeah, we’re in.
