Andrew Garfield Ignites a Rebellion in the First Trailer for THE UPRISING, Paul Greengrass' New Historical Thriller
Focus Features has released the first trailer for The Uprising, and it looks like audiences are in for an intense historical epic filled with war, revolution, and one man's fight against a ruthless king.
The film stars Andrew Garfield as the legendary leader of a rebellion that rises against the oppressive rule of King Richard II. Set in the aftermath of the Black Plague, The Uprising tells the story of a country pushed to its breaking point as crushing taxes are forced upon the people to bankroll the Hundred Years' War.
With England on the verge of collapse, Garfield's character rallies ordinary citizens into an army willing to stand against the crown in a desperate fight for justice and survival.
The official logline reads: “Andrew Garfield stars as the legendary leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. As war burns across England, he forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice and survival.”
The trailer has the kind of gritty, grounded intensity you'd expect from director Paul Greengrass, blending large-scale battles with personal drama as the conflict spreads across medieval England. Greengrass has built a career on creating tension through realism, and it looks like he's bringing that same style to this historical story.
Joining Garfield is a fantastic supporting cast that includes Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, Katherine Waterston, and Sky Yang.
Greengrass wrote, directed, and produced The Uprising. Producing alongside him are Jason Blum, Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, Joe Neurauter, and Lars Sylvest.
Greengrass has also been keeping busy. He also directed The Lost Bus, the disaster thriller starring Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera. His impressive directing résumé also includes Jason Bourne, News of the World, 22 July, Green Zone, Captain Phillips, and United 93, the film that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
The Uprising opens exclusively in theaters on September 11.
