Andrew Garfield Shuts Down Spider-Man Return Rumors with a Hard a “Unequivocally F***ing No”
It looks like fans hoping to see Andrew Garfield swing back into the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday are going to be disappointed. The actor gave a very clear, and very colorful, answer when asked if he’d be returning as Spider-Man in the upcoming Marvel epic.
When asked point-blank in a new GQ fan Q&A if he was reprising his role, Garfield didn’t hesitate:
“No, unequivocally f*cking no.”
Well, that’s about as definitive as it gets. It’s so crazy to me that “Entertainment Journalists” continue to ask him about this! Even if he is, it’s not like he can tell them! It must be so annoying for him.
Sure, fans have heard Garfield give a hard “no” before. He unequivocally denied appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home too, and we all know how that turned out.
The actor’s surprise return alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland in the 2021 multiverse crossover became one of the biggest moments in superhero movie history, so it’s understandable that audiences are taking his new denial with a grain of salt. But, don’t be disappointed if he doesn’t show up! There really is a good chance he won’t appear in the movie.
Still, Garfield has made it clear that if he were to suit up again, it would need to be under some very unusual circumstances. Earlier this year, he said,
“I think it would have to be very weird. I think I would like to do something very strange. Something very unique, and offbeat and surprising, kind of like the creative freedom they have with the animated Spider-Verse movies.”
And he reinforced that sentiment recently, adding,
“I really love the Spider-Verse movies. I love [writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller]. Just putting that out there.”
So while Garfield’s days as Spider-Man in the MCU may be over, it sounds like his affection for the character, and the inventive storytelling that comes with it hasn’t gone anywhere.
Even without him, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be massive with a huge cast with more announcements to come.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026, and while Garfield may not be back as Spider-Man, the multiverse still leaves plenty of room for surprises.
