Anthony Mackie Says He Wants His Version of Captain America To "Represent Everybody, Not Just a Specific Group of People"
While Marvel fans wait for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series to premiere on Disney+ this summer, Anthony Mackie has some things to say regarding what he would like to see from his character Sam Wilson. He will be making the transformation into Captain America and when talking about taking on this mantle, he explains that he wants his version of Cap to represent everyone.
During a recent interview, Mackie was asked to share his thoughts on Captain America being a black man, and this was his response:
"With the idea of being a black man and becoming Captain America, it's been a daunting task because I think, at this day and age in America, I think we are open-minded to the idea of having my face represent us, as a country, because we're truly a melting pot. So there is no distinctive look or feel or design of an American. We'll all Americans."
I want my Captain America to represent everybody, not just a specific group of people."
The actor went on to reveal that in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series, fans will "really get to know Sam Wilson, you really get to know Bucky Barnes as individuals and human beings, and their thoughts and feelings."
I think it’s great that these characters will be explored more in this series! I’m a fan of them and it’ll be great to see them team up to save the world from an evil threat!
According to a previous report, we learned that Falcon and Winter Soldier might end up having to deal with some sort of massive viral threat. The report speculates that this viral threat could come from Virus X, the Madbomb, or something else that will put the population in grave danger. I imagine this play was hatched by Daniel Bruhl's Baron Zemo.
It’s also been rumored that the "crux of what that show’s going to be” is that “the government doesn’t want Sam Wilson to be Captain America.” That’s probably how the character U.S. Agent comes into play. You can see a previously released photo of Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent holding Captain America’s shield, here. Emily Van Camp will also return as Sharon Carter.
It was also reported that Toby Jones’ character, Arnim Zola, could make an appearance in the Disney+ series as well.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will be directed by Kari Skogland, and John Wick creator Derek Kolstad and Empire’s Malcolm Spellman are writing the scripts for the series. The series will premiere in August 2020!
