AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Actress Rebecca Romijn Talks About the Script Still Not Being Finished
While Avengers: Doomsday is officially in production, it turns out the script isn’t quite locked in. This latest update comes straight from Rebecca Romijn, who’s making her long-awaited return to the Marvel universe as Mystique in the highly anticipated 2026 film, which is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.
Romijn spoke during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con and offered some honest insight, saying:
“The script hasn’t — they haven’t finished writing it. It’s been very, very fun, and we don’t know yet. They keep everything very close to the vest themselves in an effort to keep everything under wraps.”
When asked whether she’s finished filming or has more to shoot, Romijn responded, “not quite sure.” Her answers were carefully measured, giving fans just enough to spark curiosity while keeping the rest locked down.
On whether she’s read the full script, she simply replied: “I cannot confirm nor deny that I have read the entire script.” As for which actors she shares scenes with? “Can’t say.”
Despite the tight-lipped nature of the production, Romijn did reflect on the surreal experience of stepping back into the blue body paint nearly two decades after X-Men: The Last Stand.
“It was very surreal to be with my old cast as well as a new cast. I had crazy dreams while I was there for a large chunk of shooting. Like, really kind of regressive dreams.”
Her comments here come on the heels of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige addressing how the studio handles scripts during production. While he insisted that Marvel never starts filming without a script, he also emphasized the studio's culture of constant evolution, something he refers to as “plus-ing.”
“In fact, there is ‘plus-ing’ occurring on the set of Avengers: Doomsday as we speak. There’s plus-ing happening every day on the Avengers: Doomsday set right now, and it is amazing to watch because what those filmmakers, those actors, both the ones that are playing these characters for the first or second time and the one playing them for the 10th or 12th time, are the best in the world at it, and know these characters so well.
“So if they have an idea, you want to listen to it and you want to adjust to it and you want to improve it. I wouldn’t want to change that.”
So yes, the Avengers: Doomsday script is not finalized, this is just a part of Marvel’s process, and it explains a lot about why their movies have been hit and miss over the last few years. .
The film is currently set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
