Wild Marvel Theory Claims AVENGERS: ENDGAME's New Ending Retcons Iron Man Into Doctor Doom
Marvel Studios is getting ready to bring fans back to theaters for Avengers: Endgame, and while the movie has already cemented itself as one of the biggest cinematic events of all time, its upcoming re-release could give fans a surprising new reason to watch through the credits.
The biggest talking point surrounding the re-release is the confirmed new post-credits scene, and one fascinating theory suggests it could completely change how fans view Tony Stark's final moments while laying the groundwork for Avengers: Doomsday.
With less than six months until Avengers: Doomsday arrives, Marvel has a lot riding on the return of Joe Russo and Anthony Russo. The Multiverse Saga has had its share of ups and downs, and the next Avengers movie has the difficult task of pulling everything together while getting audiences excited about what's next.
Marvel can't exactly reshape everything that's already been announced, but it can start connecting the dots in clever ways. That's where the Endgame re-release comes into play.
When Avengers: Endgame originally hit theaters in 2019, it broke from Marvel tradition by skipping a standard post-credits scene. Instead, fans heard the unmistakable sound of Tony Stark hammering away while building the Mark I armor during his captivity in Iron Man.
It served as a fitting farewell to the Infinity Saga, bringing the MCU full circle after Stark sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos. There weren't any visuals attached to the audio, but longtime fans immediately recognized sound of hammering.
Now, however, Marvel has an opportunity to completely reframe that ending. One of the most interesting fan theories making the rounds suggests that the familiar hammering may no longer belong to Tony Stark at all.
Instead, the new post-credits scene could reveal that the sound is actually Robert Downey Jr.'s new MCU character, Doctor Doom, forging his legendary mask.
If Marvel goes in that direction, it would create a direct narrative bridge between Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Doomsday.
In Marvel Comics, Victor Von Doom creates his own metal mask after a laboratory accident leaves his face permanently scarred. Translating that moment into the MCU through Endgame's iconic closing audio would be a surprisingly simple way to establish Doom's arrival without needing a lengthy setup.
The scene wouldn't even need to reveal Downey Jr.'s face. Showing the mask being forged, along with a glimpse of Doom's armor or silhouette, would likely be enough to send audiences into a frenzy while saving valuable screen time in Avengers: Doomsday.
Considering everything that film already has to accomplish, getting part of Doom's introduction out of the way beforehand would certainly help.
Of course, not everyone is thrilled with the idea. Part of what made Avengers: Endgame so satisfying was how definitive its ending felt. Tony Stark's sacrifice brought the Infinity Saga to a close, and the decision to leave audiences with nothing more than the sound of Iron Man building his first suit gave the film a poetic ending that celebrated where the entire MCU began.
Revisiting that moment years later and assigning it an entirely different meaning could take away some of the emotional weight that fans have attached to the ending for nearly a decade.
Some viewers will undoubtedly prefer the original version, while others may enjoy seeing Marvel connect its past to its future. Either way, changing such an iconic ending is always going to spark debate.
Ultimately, everything comes down to execution. If Marvel Studios can make the new post-credits scene feel meaningful and naturally connect Avengers: Endgame to Avengers: Doomsday, the gamble could pay off. But if the addition feels forced or exists only to generate shock value, it risks undercutting one of the MCU's most celebrated finales.
For now, it's still just a theory, but it’ll be interesting to see what Marvel has got planned.
