BLUE BEETLE's Xolo Maridueña Shares How James Gunn Told Him He'd Be in the New DCU
Before Blue Beetle was released in theaters, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed that the character would continue on in the new DCU. Warner Bros. and DC really believed in this movie, they believed in it more than Batgirl, which was one of a few projects that ended up being scrapped for tax breaks. But, Blue Beetle lived on to become the lowest-grossing DCEU movie of all time.
The movie actually did get a good amount of positive reviews, but those reviews didn’t help people go out and watch the movie. Regardless of how the film did at the box office, I assume Gunn still intends to bring the character back for another movie. Who knows!? All I know is that Gunn said he was going to be a part of the future of DC and Gunn doesn’t lie.
Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña recently sat down for an interview with CB, and talked about how he found out about Gunn's decision to bring him back for more action in the DC Comics universe, saying:
"Well, that is how it works. You know, once the tweet goes out, then they put that on a piece of paper. James Gunn signs it and then I'm on board. So, no. I mean, it was like, luckily I had spoken with him prior to that tweet. So, it was… We were in post production. You know, in the offices next to each other. So, it was like, if it was gonna be anything otherwise, I would have found out before.
"But, like in a word… again, validating to know that [Walter] Hamada and the Warner Bros. DC team that brought me on and believed in me. In the beginning, it was them who handed it off to Gunn and to Peter [Safran], who also felt the same way? Like, that feels so good. And, where it goes in the future? We'll see."
I imagine that it’s going to be a long time before we see Blue Beetle back on the big screen as there is a whole lineup of films currently in development. I guess he could show up in one of those, but we’ll just have to wait and see. Some of the upcoming DC films include Superman: Legacy, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and more.
