Blumhouse Is Rebooting the BLAIR WITCH Horror Franchise
During Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation today, it was announced that producer Jason Blum and Blumhouse are going to be rebooting the Blair Witch horror franchise.
There are no other details on this project, but I’m intruiged. I’m curious to see what Blumhouse might have planned for this next Blair Witch movie. Blum will team up with producer Roy Lee on the project.
I remember watching the original film in theaters back in 1999. I enjoyed that movie, but I especially loved the marketing behind it! That marketing is what made that movie such a huge success, and it’s something that can’t be recreated for the franchise.
Almost a year ago it was reported that another Blair Witch Project was in development with director Oliver Park (The Offering) and Haxan Films, which is the production company that was behind the original Blair Witch Project. That project also had both Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the writers and directors of the original movie attached as producers.
I assume that project is no longer happening, but maybe its a parg of what his happening over at Lionsgate and Blumhouse? I have no idea.
I think there’s a great and unique way to handle this franchise, and maybe Blumhouse will be able to figure it out. I’ve always been interested in the Blair Witch lore, which centers on Elly Kedward, who terrorized the town of Blair, now Burkittsville, during the late 1700's and was executed for her crimes.
The following year, her accusers as well as many of the town's children disappeared without explanation, and as a result the town was abandoned.
What would you like to see from a new Blair Witch movie?
