Blumhouse's MAGIC 8 BALL Movie Being Written by COCAINE BEAR Writer
Several years ago Mattel teamed up with Blumhouse to produce a film based on the classic 1950s toy Magic 8 Ball. The last we heard, Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare) was attached to direct the movie, and the project just landed a new screenwriter.
According to a report from the New Yorker highlighting the upcoming Barbie movie, they revealed that “Jimmy Warden, the screenwriter of Cocaine Bear, ha[s] devised a horror-comedy about the Magic 8 Ball.”
With the writer of Cocaine Bear behind the movie, it’s safe to say that this Magic 8 Ball movie is going to get into some wild, unhinged territory.
It’s unclear if Wadlow is still attached to direct, but whoever it is will most likely have a fun script to work with. With the project set up at Blumhouse, we can expect the film to be a horror thriller, and I imagine that the Magic 8 Ball will conjure up some terrifying demons. Who knows, there are a lot of different directions that they can go with a cursed Magic 8 Ball.
There aren’t any story details, but Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films previously said: “Since the 1950s, Magic 8 Ball has inspired imagination, suspense and intrigue across generations. This iconic toy has a built-in connection with fans and untapped potential for storytelling. There are no partners better suited to tell the Magic 8 Ball story in collaboration with Mattel Films than Jeff Wadlow and Blumhouse Productions, whose unique approach to the thriller genre has captivated audiences worldwide and has gained widespread accolades.”
Blumhouse founder Jason Blum added: “As fans of Mattel and their iconic brands, we’re looking forward to bringing Magic 8 Ball, one of their most celebrated toys, to life, and playing against expectations in doing so. We look forward to partnering with Mattel Films to put this project on the fast track to the big screen and create a memorable experience for moviegoers.”
The previous draft of the script had been written by Wadlow, Jillian Jacobs, and Chris Roach.
