CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD's Anthony Mackie on Film's Trump Comparisons: "Let's Chill The F*ck Out"
Anthony Mackie isn’t here for the negativity surrounding Captain America: Brave New World. With rumors of extensive reshoots and mixed test screenings making the rounds, the actor is looking to set the record straight… Marvel’s next Captain America movie is in good shape.
In a recent interview with Esquire, Mackie, who has seen the film in its entirety, pushed back against concerns that the movie is in trouble.
“It’s literally the best movie it can be. It stays in the lines of Marvel. It stays in the lines of Captain America, and it’s fun and it’s big.”
He also reminded fans that reshoots are a normal part of the process, not a sign of disaster. “Every movie that Marvel has made, every movie that DC has made—Star Wars, Star Trek, Disney—has done reshoots.”
As for the inevitable political discourse, Mackie had a blunt response when asked about comparisons between Harrison Ford’s President Ross, aka Red Hulk, and President Donald Trump.
“I hope, as a country, we’re tired of all the political jousting,” Mackie said. “Let’s just go to the movies and chill the f-ck out. We could’ve made this motherf-cker yellow and it would’ve been a problem.”
Mackie also briefly touched on Avengers: Doomsday, the next major crossover event in the MCU. While little is known about the film, he’s confident the Russo brothers will deliver something fresh.
“What you don’t want is Infinity War and *Endgame 2.0,” he said. “The Russos, they’re so smart, and they have such a hold on this universe and the history and the comic books that I know they have an idea. I mean, they better have an idea. I don’t know how you put all those people onscreen together and make it work.”
Co-director Anthony Russo also chimed in on Sam Wilson’s future in the MCU, hinting that he’ll play a unique and crucial role in what’s to come.
“He represents a unique space in the Avengers spectrum. And that’s the greatest thing, because sooner or later the collective storytelling is going to be in that space he occupies.”
One thing we know for sure is that Marvel is all in on Sam Wilson’s Captain America journey, and despite the noise, Mackie isn’t worried about the film. Now it’s just a matter of seeing if Brave New World lives up to the hype.
