Christopher Nolan Explains How Taylor Swift Is Teaching Hollywood Studios a Lesson
The theatrical release of Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour was a monstrous success at the box office, and it has already become the highest-grossing concert movie of all time with over $123.5 million.
Everyone is noticing, including Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan who believes that Swift is teaching the Hollywood Studios a lesson. During a recent discussion at City University of New York, Nolan talked about Swift going directly through AMC Theaters to distribute her film, and that this should cause studios to shift away from the traditional distribution model. He explained:
"Taylor Swift is about to show the studios, because her concert film is not being distributed by the studios, it's being distributed by a theater owner, AMC, and it's going to make an enormous amount of money, and this is the thing, [theatrical exhibition is] a format and a way of seeing things and sharing stories, or sharing experiences, that's incredibly valuable. And if [the studios] don't want it, somebody else will. So that's just the truth of it."
Yeah, he makes some good points there. While there have been concert films released before, obviously, we’ve never seen anything like what Taylor Swift brought to the table with her The Eras Tour. If the studios aren’t paying attention, you know that other musical artists are! This is a whole new income stream, and it’s something that I think people are going to start taking advantage of.
Leave it to Taylor Swift to show the entertainment industry what’s possible.
