CRYSTAL LAKE Creator Teases More "Grounded" Jason Voorhees and the Origin of His Mask

Jason Voorhees is getting a new look for Peacock’s upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, but fans shouldn’t expect the show to simply recreate the version of the character they already know.

Brad Caleb Kane, creator of Crystal Lake, has offered some new details about the series’ approach to Jason Voorhees, including the extensive makeup used to bring the young character to life and a mask with an important connection to Friday the 13th history.

While Kane isn’t ready to reveal exactly what Jason looks like without his famous hockey mask, he teased that the transformation involves “pounds and pounds of makeup.”

Kane also praised legendary makeup effects artist Tom Savini, whose work helped establish Jason’s original appearance. “Savini killed it,” Kane said.

“[He] reached right into our brains and pulled out our worst nightmares of what a deformed child might look like,” Kane continued. “But we’re trying to do something a little bit more grounded and a little bit up-to-date. We’re stepping away from words like ‘freak’ and stepping more into words like ‘outcast’ and ‘other.’”

That approach makes sense for Crystal Lake. This isn’t a story about the unstoppable hockey-masked killer stalking campers through the woods. It goes back to Jason as a child and explores the tragedy that eventually turns the Voorhees family into one of horror’s most infamous names.

Jason won’t be wearing his signature hockey mask in the series, but masks will still be part of his story. Kane teased that fans may recognize what the show has planned.

“There is a mask. It might be a different mask than fans are used to, but it will not be a different mask than fans have seen.” He added, “We show the origin story of the mask and why it’s there specifically, and it all connects.”

The hockey mask didn’t become Jason’s trademark until Friday the 13th Part III, so Crystal Lake has decades of franchise history it can pull from while telling its own version of how the imagery surrounding Jason developed.

Set during the 1970s, several years before the original 1980 Friday the 13th, Crystal Lake digs into Pamela Voorhees’ past and the family tragedy connected to Camp Crystal Lake.

Linda Cardellini stars as Pamela, a single mother struggling with overwhelming grief nearly a year after the drowning of her sickly young son, Jason, played by Callum Vinson. Her life takes another dark turn when strangers arrive at her door looking into her past, triggering a disturbing series of events.

Rather than jumping straight into the familiar slasher formula, the series is being positioned as a slow-burn horror thriller focused on Pamela, Jason, and the history that eventually leads to the nightmare fans know.

Giving young Jason a more grounded physical appearance could be an interesting choice, especially if the goal is to make audiences see him as an isolated kid before he becomes a horror icon.

The mask origin is another intriguing piece of the puzzle, particularly with Kane making it clear that longtime fans have seen this particular mask before.

Crystal Lake premieres October 15, 2026, on Peacock.
