Daniel's Favorite Geeky Things of 2020

Even though last year was more or less a flaming crap storm in a number of ways, we still ended up getting some pretty great content. Here is a rundown of MY favorite games, TV shows, movies, and other stuff with a brief reason why I loved it and a link to its review.

Games

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Although this game was both loved and hated by fans, I particularly enjoyed the mix of real time and turn based action and new pacing of the story. This is a great way to be introduced to the franchise or relive it. 8/10

What The Golf?

This is easily the most silly thing I’ve seen all year and every moment of it is amazing. From a surprisingly large single player to an aggressively hilarious multiplayer, you’ll have a hard time not smiling while playing this game. 10/10

One Step From Eden

Deck building, intense action and strategic choice all happen in a matter of minutes. The chaos and variety in this game is staggering. No game has kept me more engaged this year than One Step From Eden. 10/10

Genshin Impact

While I didn’t actually review this game, it doesn’t mean I didn’t spend a lot of hours exploring the massive world, killing monsters and cooking food. Being free to play on all platforms is great, just watch out for that “gotcha model.” If I was to rate it now, I would say: 9/10.

Destiny 2: Beyond Light and Other Seasons

This is a list of my favorite things, not the best necessarily. Destiny 2 is still suffering from a variety of long term or higher level issues, but this year has been a year of crazy improvements in storytelling, loot, activities and content. The year overall for me has been a 9/10.

TV/Anime

Castlevania Season 3

Season 1 of this show was good, season 2 was awesome, and this 3rd season was incredible. The animation, drama and exploration of character are all top notch. There is basically no reason why you shouldn’t watch (warning, it is REALLY graphic in about every way). 10/10

DOROHEDORO

The 3D anime side of Netflix has been...bad. However, the only saving grace is DOROHEDORO. It is horrifying, hilarious, and high quality. Based on a manga, this show brings a lot of creativity and imagination to Netflix. 8/10

Umbrella Academy Season 2

It took me a while to fully appreciate this season, but after a second watch through and more careful understanding, this season grew on me. Between the serious drama, self-exploration, music, action and story, I’d recommend both seasons to just about everyone. 9/10

Great Pretender

Another great entry into Netflix’s anime section, Great Pretender seasons one and two came out this year. While this show isn’t perfect, the characters, pacing and twists make this show a delight to watch and pretty good for newcomers to anime. S1 8/10 --- S2 8/10

Movies

The Half Of It

With plenty of teen movies and shows coming out every year, it was nice to have one more focused on self understanding and exploration than just drama and romance. There is plenty of shenanigans and love, but they add layers of depth making it a superb film. 9/10

Tenet

There are a lot of reasons to love (and hate) Tenet, but I thoroughly enjoyed the visual storytelling, soundtrack and complex story. I’d recommend going in with an open mind and being ready for a different film experience. 8/10

Other Stuff

Logitech G915 TKL

This keyboard is amazing. It does everything that I could want and more in a keyboard. Yeah, the price is pretty steep, but it is (so far) worth every penny. 10/10

Pan Am: The Game

Worker placement, style and unique strategies all combine into this blast from the past game. Pan Am: The Game surprised me with its balanced gameplay and replayability. 9/10
