Danny Boyle Shot 28 YEARS LATER on an iPhone 15 Pro Max

Director Danny Boyle’s wrapped production on his upcoming horror thriller 28 Years Later earlier this summer. This is the film that will launch a whole new trilogy of films with Alex Garland writing the script.

We’ve now learned from Wired that 28 Years Later was filmed using “a bunch of adapted iPhone 15s,” specifically the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

When talking about the production, the article says: “…the Hollywood thriller, with its budget of $75 million, [is] the biggest movie to date filmed with smartphones.”

“Principal filming for 28 Years Later wrapped at the end of August, and until now the production has kept under wraps the fact that the movie was shot with smartphones, with the staff being asked to signed NDAs preventing the disclosure of this detail.”

Wired also reveals, “In addition to using the iPhone 15 Pro Max as the principal camera, some scenes in 28 Years Later were shot with action cams strapped to farm animals.”

This is really cool to learn! This isn’t the first movie to be shot on a smart phone, but for a major big-budget motion picture it’s a first.

It’s just more proof that if you’ve got a great idea for a movie and an iPhone, you can go out and shoot a movie!

Garland previously offered some insight on the theme of the film. He shared: “It’s to do with the passage of time, and thinking about what effect the passage of time would have.”

He added: “Is it what you would traditionally call a post-apocalyptic state? Or has something else begun to manifest? Time is really at the core of the engine of the film.”

When previously teasing the third movie, Garland said: "I have got a really cool idea for it, but it's a much bigger movie, and one of the things about 28 Days Later is that it was small and punk and this idea is less small and punk.”

The film stars Jodie Comer, Cillian Murphy, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, and Ralph Fiennes . The Marvels director Nia DaCosta is in talks to helm the second movie.

28 Years Later arrives in theaters on June 20, 2025 from Sony.
