DARDEVIL Star Charlie Cox Reveals Jon Bernthal Would Rewrite His Lines During Production
Jon Bernthal is set to reprise his role in the upcomng Marvel series Daredevil: Born Again and after that he will be back in a Special Presentation project.
Ever since it was announced that Bernthal would be stepping back into the boots of Frank Castle, fans have been hyped to see him in action again.
During a recent press conference, Daredevil star Charlie Cox opened up about how Daredevil and The Punisher push each other to the edge, teasing some intense moments between them in the upcoming Disney+ series.
“He has a couple of really great scenes, potentially iconic moments. They're an absolute joy to shoot! I feel like Jon and Charlie are very different people, but Daredevil and Frank are much more similar to one another.
“So, it's fun to play with that. And often when I'm in a scene as Daredevil with Frank, he pulls me closer to a Daredevil that I'm frightened of and excited by. And I think that it's written and baked in the material as well.”
While the tension between them is written into the script, Bernthal doesn’t stick to what’s on the page. According to Cox, he’s constantly reworking his lines, even up to the moment cameras start rolling.
Cox shared details on one particular scene where Bernthal called him the night before shooting, saying he needed to tweak some dialogue. That alone was unexpected, but what happened on set took it even further.
“There was a scene this season, and he cares so much, he gets so into it, like thinks about it, it's almost like a pain-body. We had this scene and he called me the night before and he said 'some of these lines don't make sense for me for where I'm at, I need to mess with these a little bit. Here's what I'm gonna say, I want to say this.'”
“He just changed some of his lines, he had kinda written his own thing. So, I had to adapt and relearn my stuff, which I'm totally okay to do as he's brilliant. And then we get to set and he didn't say any of those, he just made up a whole new set of lines. And I was like, okay…!”
That level of spontaneity might throw some actors off, but Cox took it in stride. Bernthal’s approach of fully emersing himself in the role of Frank Castle and adjusting the dialogue to fit where the character is emotionally just shows how deep he goes into the role.
After reading this, I guess it makes complete sense that Bernthal will also be writing Marvel’s upcoming Punisher Special Presentation, it’s clear he’s got more than just acting chops and he wants to be the one to shape the character’s journey in the MCU.
