David Tennant Confirmed To Reprise His Role as The Droid, Huyang, in STAR WAR: AHSOKA
There was so much awesomeness loaded into the trailer for Star Wars: Ahsoka that was unleashed and while there are a lot of fans talking about it, one thing that hasn’t really been a topic of conversation is the fact that the droid Huyang appeared in it!
Huyang is a centuries-old droid who was voiced by David Tennant and it was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration that Tennant is reprising his role! When talking about his return, Dave Filoni said: “You have to have him. He makes it work.”
The character made his Star Wars debut in The Clone Wars, in a story that followed Master Yoda and Ahsoka Tano as they lead a group of Jedi younglings to the chilly planet of Ilum.
The quest is a trial where the younglings are given challenges to overcome their fears and they are tasked with bringing back a kyber crystal to the Jedi Temple. Huyang is the droid who instructed the younglings to construct their lightsabers.
Huyang told the younglings: "From the Battles of Rashfond, to the Peacekeeping of Parliock, to our very own Clone Wars, the lightsaber is a Jedi's only true ally. But how do they work? Hmm? Yes, you have brought me crystals, but they're all useless unless you give them life. Do you know how to awaken the Force within the crystal? No? Then I suggest you listen and learn until you think of a question this droid cannot answer."
One of the things that make this character so interesting and cool is he has the knowledge stored for the plans of every lightsaber that’s ever built under his watch. Now, this droid is back in action and working with Ahsoka Tano, which is cool!
The series is set after the fall of the Empire, Ahsoka “follows the former Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.”
Ahsoka and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) are on the hunt for Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) in hopes that it will lead them to find the lost Ezra Bridger, the young Jedi who disappeared with Thrawn many years ago. The series directly follows up on several threads from the animated series Star Wars Rebels.
The footage also confirms that Mary Elizabeth Winstead is playing Hera Syndulla, and the droid, Chopper, is also back. We even get our first glimpse at Grand Admiral Thrawn and the trailer teases the whole “Heir to the Empire,” thing which was an overt nod to Timothy Zahn’s iconic Extended Universe novels.
The series also stars Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, Ivanna Sakhno, Eman Esfandi as Ezra, and Ray Stevenson. The limited series is written by Dave Filoni who executive produces along with Jon Favreau and Kathleen Kennedy.
The series will debut exclusively on Disney+ in August 2023.
