DC Studios Reportedly Developing a PLASTIC MAN Project

It looks like DC Studios may finally be bringing one of the strangest, most versatile heroes in their roster to life. There’s a new rumor about a Plastic Man project in the works, and while there aren’t many details, fans are already debating whether this bizarre character will make his debut in a feature film or a streaming series.

Talks of a Plastic Man project first surfaced last summer when reports suggested that Darren Aronofsky (Caught Stealing) was circling the idea.

That made a lot of people raise their eyebrows considering Aronofsky nearly directed a gritty adaptation of Batman: Year One years ago. His silence, along with DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn not commenting on the chatter, has only fueled speculation that something is really happening behind the scenes.

According to industry insider @MyTimeToShineH, a Plastic Man project is officially in development at DC Studios. No word yet if it will be a big-screen adventure or a smaller-scale DCU series, though many suspect it could fall into the same budget range as the upcoming Clayface project or the long-delayed Sgt. Rock.

Created by Jack Cole back in 1941, Plastic Man began as Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, a crook who gained the ability to stretch, reshape, and morph his body after a freak chemical accident. Instead of continuing his life of crime, he decided to use his bizarre new powers for good.

Known for his wisecracks and unpredictable transformations, Plastic Man has always stood out as one of DC’s most comedic and wildly creative superheroes.

One actor already campaigning for the role is Ben Schwartz, who stars in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The actor has made it clear he wants to bring O’Brian to life in the DCU, saying:

"I’m actually friends of James. Got to love James Gunn and can’t wait for his Superman too. My, plea for superheroes. I, of course, love the Marvel Universe, but DC has a character named Plastic Man. I always thought that he could be like the Deadpool, that universe."

Schwartz added:

"He could be comedic. He has like, a big thief back story. [Patrick] O’Brian, I’m obsessed with that character. And, he’s funny. And I think having a funny character in the Justice League, because technically he is a part of the Justice League. I think that would be like a perfect foil to all the other serious characters they have over there."

Plastic Man is the type of eccentric hero that would instantly appeal to Gunn’s sensibilities. He’s funny, unpredictable. Plastic Man could end up being one of the weirdest and most exciting additions to the DCU lineup.
