DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Explain Why Wolverine Won't Break The Fourth Wall

While Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine breaks the fourth wall in the Deadpool & Wolverine cell phone PSA currently playing in movie theaters, don’t expect the character to break the fourth wall and address the audience in the actual movie.

Breaking the fourth wall is only meant for Deadpool, and in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and Jackman explain why.

Levy says: “So many actors come into a Deadpool movie and they’re like, 'Great, I get to talk to the camera and break the fourth wall.' We’re like, 'No, no, no. There actually is a system here.' And that keeps Deadpool’s tone unique to him.”

Reynolds added: “There are rules. Very specific rules. You would diminish stakes in the film if everyone—or even anyone else—was also aware of the fourth wall or any kind of meta aspect. Deadpool is the only character who has that ability to do that.

“If everyone did that, then you would no longer invest in that character as much. You really want to believe that the villain is a villain. You really want to believe that your costar’s character is true as well.

“Deadpool can undermine that—and does undermine that—because you don’t want the audience to take him as seriously.”

Jackman went on to say: “I made the same mistake—day one. I made the suggestion and it was like, 'Yeah…' [Winces.]”

Reynolds shared: “I always feel like an absolute dick when I’m trying to explain: I need people as invested as humanly possible in every other character while knowing that only Deadpool is the unreliable narrator.”

Jackman concluded: “Ryan beautifully describes Deadpool’s brain as a half-baked omelet. And so, whatever he’s doing—talking to a camera, to Wolverine—it’s just another layer of annoying crap that I’ve got to put up with. Who knows what the hell he is doing? But it’s just another excuse to punch him in the face.”

I’m happy that they are sticking to that and making sure that Deadpool is the only character in the film that will be able to break the fourth wall.

Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date – “Deadpool & Wolverine. A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him.

When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier… reluctanter? Reluctantest?

He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to – Fu-k. Synopses are so f–king stupid.”

The existential threat in the movie is Cassandra Nova, who is the evil twin sister of the X-Men's Professor Charles Xavier who poses a threat to the multiverse.

This whole story will lead to Deadpool changing the history of the MCU as he and Wolverine jump across the multiverse in a crazy adventure.

Shawn Levy is directing the movie and the confirmed cast for the movie also includes Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, Morena Baccarin and Stefan Kapicic as Vanessa and Colossus, Matthew Macfadyen as a TVA Agent, and Leslie Uggams as Blind Al.

They are joined by Brianna Hildebrand and Shioli Kutsuna, who will also return to the franchise as Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s girlfriend Yukio. It was previously confirmed that Jennifer Garner will return as Elektra in the movie.

Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26th!
