Did AVENGERS: ENDGAME Allow for Captain America to Come Face to Face with an Old Foe?
There’s been a lot of discussion about Captain America and his role in Avengers: Endgame, and the Russo Bros. have answered some of these questions for us. They’ve now answered one that has been lingering in my mind the past few days.
If you haven’t seen Endgame yet, they you won’t want to read any further.
At the end of the film, Steve Rogers takes the Infinity Stone through the Quantum Realm to return them to the right place and time throughout the universe. That means one of the places he had to got was the planet of Vormir, where the Red Skull is the keeper of the Soul Stone.
Does this mean that Captain America came face to face again with his old foe? According to director Joe Russo, the answer is yes. While talking to Chinese media, he explained:
"Red Skull would probably put the soul stone back to its location, and wait for the next unfortunate stone seeker to make a sacrifice. Cap and Red Skull probably won't fight. It's because it's his mission to return the stone to its original place. The Red Skull is also no longer the same Red Skull from FA. He is more like a ghost, you could almost say he's a completely different entity now. He only exists to guard the stone, his past conscious may or may not exist anymore."
I would have loved to see Steve’s reaction when he walked up and saw Red Skull! How would that conversation have played out? I would have liked to see this little reunion.
Russo also addressed if there were two Captain Americas running around in the same timeline, saying:
"To me, CA's action in the end wasn't the fact he wanted to change anything, it's more like me has made a choice. He chose to go back to past and lived with the one he loved for the rest of his life. The time travel in this movie created an alternate reality. He lived a completely different life in that world. We don't know how exactly his life turned out, but I'd like to believe he still helped many others when they were needed in that world.
"Yes, there were two CA in that reality, it's just like what Hulk said, what happened in the past has already happened. If you go back to past, you simply created a new reality. The characters in this movie created new timeline when they went back to the past, but it had no effect to the prime universe. What happened in the past 22 movies was still canon."
I hope that we get to see a film or series that explores these other adventures of Captain America. That could be a lot of fun! Especially with Peggy Carter by his side! The adventures of Captain America and Peggy Carter!
