Doctor Fate’s DCU Future Gets a Surprising Update From Pierce Brosnan and James Gunn Responds
If you enjoyed seeing Pierce Brosnan step into the mystical world of Black Adam, you might have something exciting to look forward to. The actor has hinted that Doctor Fate could appear in Man of Tomorrow, the upcoming film that will continue shaping James Gunn’s DCU.
Brosnan’s Doctor Fate was one of the coolest parts of Black Adam, even though the movie struggled both critically and commercially. Dwayne Johnson wanted to turn that film into the launching pad for several characters, Doctor Fate included. The former franchise plans even floated the Justice Society stepping forward as a primary team in the universe.
Those ideas were scrapped once Warner Bros. Discovery changed direction and DC Studios was formed. The push to pit Johnson’s Black Adam against Henry Cavill’s Superman vanished, along with conversations about spinoffs and follow ups.
Johnson made his own efforts to keep the momentum alive, sharing financial breakdowns and even teasing a Hawkman movie, but the studio moved on.
But, Piece’s time as Doctor Fate may not be over. When speaking with GQ, Brosnan was asked whether his time in Black Adam inspired him to chase something like a Marvel role. He answered, "No, I’m not. I’ve never banged down anyone’s door. I mean, they know where to find me."
Brosnan then added, "I’ve heard that Doctor Fate was going to have his own show, or his own movie. I’ve heard that he’s going to be in the next Superman."
He didn’t describe it as something that was planned, but as something that is planned, which certainly points toward the 2027 film Man of Tomorrow. When asked if he would return to the character, Brosnan said, "I enjoyed that, the philosophy of that character, very much, and I would definitely be open to it."
There’s no confirmation that Doctor Fate will actually appear in Man of Tomorrow, and nothing suggests Brosnan has been officially tapped to reprise the role. Still, the idea of Kent Nelson joining this new DC universe would be a major addition for fans who want to see the magical corner of DC expand.
While Brosnan looks ahead with openness, Johnson has taken a more reflective tone about his brief time in the franchise.
The actor said, "I feel like not only my time as a heel in the ring in wrestling, but it was almost like the anti-hero that eventually the Rock became. I loved making Black Adam. We had a great time. Loved creating those characters and introducing other characters, as well, in that universe."
He added, "Had a great time. Wish that universe well. And on to others."
James Gunn responded to the the comments saying: "I've never heard a Dr Fate rumor.”

Written and directed by James Gunn, Man of Tomorrow stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. reports also suggest appearances from Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and John Cena returning as Peacemaker.
Man of Tomorrow hits theaters July 9, 2027. Whether Brosnan returns or a new actor takes up the Helmet of Nabu, it sounds like Doctor Fate may not be gone from the DCU after all.
