DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES Directors on How INDIANA JONES Inspired the Film

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is a fun fantasy adventure film that the whole family can enjoy! I had a blast watching it, and I thought the story and characters had a very similar vibe to Indiana Jones. Well, it turns out that directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were very much inspired by the Indiana Jones movies when making the movie!

The directors shared in an interview with /Film how they were looking to capture the charm of the Indiana Jones movies and utilize those personality traits in their own characters. They wanted the film to feature a sympathetic band of misfit characters who never quite have all the right answers in a story where everything can and will go wrong. Goldstein said:

That's a hundred percent the kind of influence that's in our DNA when we make movies. That idea that yes, you're in a high adventure fantasy film, but the characters are imperfect. Except for maybe the Xenk character that Rege[-Jean Page] plays, they're very imperfect."

I think that they did a great job pulling that off! I noticed that stuff as I watched the movie, and it worked! This is a fun popcorn flick that fans will enjoy. It takes audiences on a fun and thrilling adventure and all of the characters in it are enjoyable! It really did feel like a Dungeons & Dragons story! When talking about telling that story Daley said:

"I think there is something uniquely chaotic about the narrative of a campaign that we alluded to in this film where the plans that you think, as an audience, our characters are carrying out, when they go wrong and they have to pivot many times over, that's not necessarily what you would expect from a normal story structure.

“Some could think that it makes it feel like it's all over the place, but to us, that sense of chaos and mayhem is exactly what makes it so fun. because you have no idea what to expect."

Exactly! I hope this movie is successful because I’d love to see more!

The movie hits theaters on March 31st, 2023!
