Early Drafts of Marvel's THUNDERBOLTS Script Have a Surprising Tragic Ending for the Characters

A recent report from THR offered an update on Thunderbolts saying that Marvel Studios hired Joanna Calo, the showrunner of the hit FX series The Bear, to work on the script for the film. In that section of the report, they also share some on the ending of the movie.

These details were pulled from early drafts of the script, and there is a chance that the movie could still end this way. There not word on how much of the script has changed since Calo took on the writing duties. So I will warn you, possible major spoilers ahead.

The report reveals that the story “centers on villains and antiheroes going on a mission that was supposed to end with their deaths.”

So, the movie would’ve seen all of these characters die at the end of the movie! This would’ve been a bold freakin’ move, one that I would be shocked by if Marvel actually followed through with it! I honestly kind of wouldn’t mind if they did. It would be so different and bold from anything that we’ve seen Marvel do before. But, yeah… they probably changed it up. But, there is a good chance that some of these characters will most likely be killed off.

It makes me wonder if the creative team watched James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, and were like, “Yeah, let’s do that.” We’ll just have to wait and see what they end up delivering with this story.

The cast of Thunderbolts includes Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes who will be leading the team, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Julie Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Lewis Pullman was offered the role of The Sentry, and of course, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Then there’s Harrison Ford, who is taking on the role of General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross who is going to be President of the United States in Captain America: New World Order.

The film is being directed by Jake Schreier (Paper Towns, Kidding), from a script by Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow) and Kurt Busiek. Thunderbolts is currently set to be released in theaters on July 25, 2025.
