ECHO Director Says Marvel Studios "Protect the Sh*t Out of Their Creatives"

There have been several reports regarding the production of Marvel Studios’ Echo series and the behind-the-scenes drama that was happening behind the scenes. Regardless of any issues the production faced, the series has been completed and the five-episode series will be released in its entirety next year.

During a recent interview with CB, director and executive producer Sydney Freeland talked about her time working on the series with Marvel and said that the experience was “overwhelmingly positive” and that Marvel protects “the sh*t out of their creatives.” She said:

"Yeah, I got to say my experience was overwhelmingly positive. I've got my producing partners in the back and our executive team, and it was a difficult, absolutely, it's the most difficult thing I've ever done. And you hear the stuff about how crazy and hectic it can be, and there's definitely truth to that. But the one thing I can say is that they protect the sh*t out of their creatives. And I felt absolutely protected and empowered, which is rare for a project of this scope and size. I've done a lot of TV work and I've done shows where they're like, 'No, every word has to be that. Every word has to be exactly.' ... So no, an incredible amount of creative empowerment."

It’s nice to hear that Freeland had such a positive experience working on the show. It seems like maybe there was definitely stuff going on behind the scenes but members of the Marvel team stood up for her and the vision of the show.

The series centers on Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) as she “struggles to reconnect with her Native American roots while balancing aspirations tied to a life of crime as successor to the brutal legacy of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) aka Kingpin. In the first episode, we are introduced to Maya Lopez and her struggles."

Echo is being developed by Etan Cohen and Emily Cohen, who are writers and executive producers on the show. The series also stars Charlie Cox, Zahn McClarnon, Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Cody Lightning, Devery Jacobs, and Graham Greene.

All five episodes will drop on Disney+ and Hulu on April 9th, 2024.
