Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey Reportedly Returning in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY After Years of Denials
Fans of the original X-Men films have held out hope that some of those iconic mutants would eventually collide with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, a new rumor suggests that one of the most powerful characters from that era might finally be making the jump.
According to recent reports, Famke Janssen is set to reprise her role as Jean Grey in Avengers: Doomsday, despite previously shutting down the idea multiple times.
The report comes from The Beyond Reporter, who claimed last month that Janssen would be part of the upcoming MCU event film and is now doubling down on that information. If accurate, Jean Grey would join a growing list of returning characters from the 20th Century Fox X-Men universe.
Patrick Stewart is already set to appear again as Professor X, alongside Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique.
The same source also stated that Halle Berry could be back as Storm, responding in the affirmative after a fan asked directly.
Janssen’s involvement has not been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios, so it remains in rumor territory for now. Still, the idea of Jean Grey returning is especially interesting given how firmly she’s dismissed the possibility in the past.
Back in October 2025, Janssen said that Marvel had “never” asked her to return to the role. At the time, she was clear about the lack of contact, but also reflective about what Jean Grey still means to fans.
“I should be flattered, I suppose, that this character has resonated with people,” she shared. “It’s been so long, but it’s nice that people are still talking about her. I’m sure every single time there’s a new movie that they’re doing, like [is it] Doomsday? … it’ll come up again,” the actress added.
Janssen went a step further and explained why returning for Avengers: Doomsday didn’t really appeal to her creatively. She talked about focusing on projects where she has more control, pointing to her Netflix series Amsterdam Empire, where she also serves as an executive producer.
A massive ensemble film like Doomsday, she suggested, wouldn’t offer that same kind of creative involvement. That said, she also left a small door open, noting she wouldn’t rule out “doing anything that’s just being part of a fun ensemble.”
As for Berry, she’s been far more playful when asked about a potential return, she neither confirmed nor denied Storm’s involvement, joking that fans should “keep hoping for [it].”
Regadless of if they are involved or not, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be a major crossover event that fully embraces the legacy of the Fox-era X-Men. Butt seeing Jean Grey back on screen after years of firm denials would be a wild twist that fans would absolutely love to see.
