FIVE NIGHTS AT FEREDDY'S Had a Big, Record-Breaking Opening Weekend at the Box Office
After years of trying to get a film adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s made, Blumhouse finally pulled it off, and it was released in theaters this past weekend. This is a project that producer Jason Blum would not give up on even though several people at Blumhouse made fun of him for pursuing it because they didn’t think it would ever happen.
The big question was, would the time, effort, and work they policy into the movie pay off? Well, the answer to that came this past weekend when audiences flocked to theaters to watch it!
Universal and Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s flick had a huge opening weekend pulling in $78 million in the United States. The movie made a total of $130.5 million in its worldwide debut, which is super impressive.
The other impressive thing about these box office numbers is that the movie was also released simultaneously on the Peacock streaming service, which shows that day-and-date releases might not be as bad for the box office as people think. But, imagine how much more the movie would have made at the box office had they not released it on Peacock!
Regardless, this has become Blumhouse’s best worldwide debut of all time, and it’s also the biggest opening weekend for a horror film directed by a woman (Emma Tammi). Oh! On top of that, the $78 million domestic debut for Five Nights at Freddy’s makes it the biggest opening ever for Halloween weekend.
Five Nights at Freddy’s was made on a production budget of just $20 million, so most of this is already pure profit for Blumhouse and Universal. With the way movies have been doing at the box office recently, I was curious about how this one would do, and I was happy to see it succeed!
There’s no doubt that Blumhouse will be moving forward with more Five Nights at Freddy’s movies. This is going to be a big horror franchise.
